Underfloor Heating – What You Need to Know and How the Heating System Works

If you’re considering installing an underfloor heating system into your home, you might want to learn a little more about it. First of all, what is it and how does it work? Electric underfloor heating is a cable system which now can be obtained on a roll which makes it far more easier to install. Cables are only 2mm or 3mm thick, depending on what wattage mat you require. You may need to overboard the floor area, using two different types of substrate depending on whether it is wood or concrete. Simply roll out the underfloor heating mat and screed over to the top of the cable. Allow the floor to dry and it is then ready for your surface covering. All you require is a fused spur switch running from your plug socket ring main, which will then be connected to your thermostat along with the underfloor heating probe. Once your floor covering is applied, you will need to leave the underfloor heating off for the recommended time to allow your screed/adhesive to cure thoroughly (please ask for recommended times as they are all different). The floor will then need to be switched on when substrate is fully cured built up to its maximum temperature, in increments over a 7 day period, then back down to a minimum in increments over the next 7 day period. Once this has been achieved, your underfloor heating is then ready to use in the normal format to your required temperature.

We recommend that you leave the underfloor heating running constantly over the winter months as it becomes more efficient as the room and its contents contain the heat it produces, and therefore will only be switching on and off (via the thermostatic control) as a top up in very short periods. As an when you feel the outdoor temperature is warm enough then you can switch off the underfloor heating completely until required the next winter.

• Which floor coverings are suitable for underfloor heating?

As you may have already noticed, we love tiles but we also supply vinyl and laminate flooring here at Raynesway Tile Warehouse, but tiles are commonly regarded as the best floor covering to be used alongside underfloor heating. One of the reasons for this is because tiles are fantastic at absorbing rather than insulating the heat from beneath. This means that not does tiling allow more of the heat from underneath spread into the entire room, but the tiles themselves become very warm as well. There’s nothing better than stepping with bare feet into a room with beautifully warm tiles!

Carpets can be used with an underfloor heating system but are known for even more thermal resistance than timber. All in all, if you want your heated floors to have maximum impact in keeping your home warm through the winter months and having an excellent impact on your energy bills, then tiled floors are the way to go!

• How do you control an underfloor heating system?

When it comes to controlling the temperature and output of your heated floors, there are two things involved. First, there will be a control unit installed somewhere in your home, from which you can adjust and determine the temperature of each room in which you have underfloor heating installed. Secondly, a heating probe to tell the control unit what the floor temperature is, both are replaceable if ever there was a need to.

Underfloor heating systems are designed to be as efficient and un-obtrusive as possible, so the touchscreen control is usually quite small and will be placed somewhere that is easy for you to access. All in all, once installed you can easily control the flow of heat and the temperature of your underfloor heating from a simple touchscreen control panel.
